Advent booklets for families PDF Print E-mail
Meeting with Fr Declan O'Loughlin is always a joy in itself. As well as that, his work as Diocesan Advisor for Religious Education in post-primary schools means that he always has ideas and resources to share. Recently he gave me copies of In the Presence of the Lord and Let's Light Up the Advent Wreath, two booklets that can families can use together enjoyable during Advent.

In the Presence of the Lord, by Caroline Pignat, provides weekly Advent prayers and daily devotions to guide family prayer. The conversational tone, child-friendly concepts, and family activities encourage children to read and lead family prayer.

Day 2 - An Old Testament example of the theme

Day 3 - Psalms or Proverbs that support the theme

Day 4 - A reflection on a nativity character in light of the theme

Day 5 - A contemporary of Jesus who exemplifies the theme

Day 6 - Jesus' words on that theme

Day 7 - God's promise to us

Each day includes the Advent candle prayer, a scripture passage and reflection, questions for discussion, and family fun ideas to help put insights into action. Choose a time and place that works best for your family and make a promise to each other to commit to family prayer this Advent. The Lord is waiting. Family prayer truly is a gift. This booklet can help deepen your family's faith, hope, love and joy as you share the greatest Christmas presence of all - the presence of the Lord in your lives.

Let's Light Up the Wreath, by Peter Mead, is a funny and informative booklet of Advent meditations. The names given to the four Advent candles (Prophets, Bethelem, Shepherds and Anglels) lead teans and young adults through the season, giving them food for thought, a few laughs, and hearts prepared to meet the Lord.
