Meeting with Fr Declan O'Loughlin is always a joy in itself. As well as that, his work as Diocesan Advisor for Religious Education in post-primary schools means that he always has ideas and resources to share. Recently he gave me copies of In the Presence of the Lord and Let's Light Up the Advent Wreath, two booklets that can families can use together enjoyable during Advent. In the Presence of the Lord, by Caroline Pignat, provides weekly Advent prayers and daily devotions to guide family prayer. The conversational tone, child-friendly concepts, and family activities encourage children to read and lead family prayer. |

The Little Book of Christian Rituals in the Home |
This lovely little book is a wonderful merging of contemporary and Celtic ritual and spirituality. Whilst beautiful in its simplicity it incorporates a wealth of ritualistic wisdom and prayer for all occasions ranging from joyful to solemn. Clear instructions are given into creating sacred space in the home and this book works equally well for those who wish to bring more Christian ritual into the home or for those who would welcome a re-introduction to Christian ritual in their lives. |

A few years ago I had the opportunity to listen to groups of parents of four and five year olds express their hopes for their children. In over fifty groups of parents one clear hope that was repeatedly expressed was the hope that their children would know the difference between right and wrong, that they would develop a moral sense.

The Gospel According to the Simpsons |
I can't confess to being a big Simpsons fan but I do know that it is watched extensively in many homes all over Ireland. I get to see it when I visit Helen, Tim, Katie, Bethan and Eoghan because it's always on before the children go to bed. Other friends tell me that The Simpsons provide the quietest twenty-three minutes of the day with parents and children being "big fans."

The Shelter of Each Other: Rebuilding our Families |
Mary Pipher's The Shelter of Each Other: Rebuilding Our Families offers a tremendously rich insight into the tasks of families in the modern world. She pinpoints the paradox that while society insists that it cherishes families, modern culture is 'at war' with families. She argues that families "have been invaded by technology, mocked or 'kitschified' by the media, isolated by demographic changes, pounded by economic forces and hurt by corporate bodies."

Where Two or Three are Gathered: Christian Families as Domestic Churches |
It has often been said that the Church's social teaching is one of it's best kept secrets. It could also be said that the Church's teaching on the significance of family life for the life and mission of the church is one of its least explored teachings. The early Christian idea that family is a representation of the church resurfaced at a gathering of bishops in Rome in the 1960's with the description of family as the domestic church. It was as if the bishops went to the church's attic, took out one its most valuable treasures and dusted it off. Forty years later exploration on the meaning and potential of the teaching remains scant. For this reason Florence Caffrey Bourg's theological exploration of the church of the home in Where Two or Three are Gathered: Christian Families as Domestic Churches is extremely important and highly welcome.

Reminders of God: Altars for Personal and Family Devotion |
Altars have a special place in this year of the Eucharist. Each of us has our favourite altars that are precious to us because of the role they have played in bringing us into communion with God at various times of our lives. Which is your favourite altar? Where is it? What are some of the occasions that you have gathered around that altar? With whom? What is it that makes that altar special to you?
I imagine that for most people reading this the altars they are familiar with are in church buildings or chapels or oratories. If this is so I might ask: have you ever had a personal altar, for example, in your bedroom or has your family ever created a family altar in your home? In her small readable book, Reminders of God: Altars for Personal and Family Devotion Anne Grizzle invites us to explore the benefits of having personal and family altars to enhance our personal prayer and the prayer life of our family. It is a book that is creative, inspirational and practical.
