It is with great sadness that I heard the news of the death of Cardinal Cahal Daly, who died peacefully this evening in the presence of family and friends at the City Hospital in Belfast, after a short illness.
At this time my thoughts and prayers are with his sister Rosaleen, his brother Paddy and sisters-in-law Barbara and Mavis, his nieces and nephews, his extended family and all who mourn him in the dioceses of Ardagh & Clonmacnois, Down & Connor and Armagh.

St Patrick's Day on March 15! |
St Patrick’s Day ‘to be moved’ said the headline in an “exclusive” newspaper report. Fr Patrick Jones explains the unique arrangement for the feast in 2008 here.
Why? Since the days of Holy Week have precedence the solemnity of St Patrick must be transferred. The usual rules would place the feast on the next available day, in this case, this would be after Holy Week and Easter Week. The feast would then be on Tuesday, 1 April. But in order to keep close to the traditional date, 17 March, Saturday, 15 March was chosen. Thus, the liturgical observance of St Patrick, in the Mass and Liturgy of the Hours, will take place on 15 March 2008.

Address by Cardinal Brady on being created a cardinal |
Ladies and Gentlemen,
First of all let me say how much I appreciate your being here today. I realise it is not easy to come to Rome and to cover a long event like this, not least in unpredictable weather. But I want to thank you for the coverage you have provided and will continue to provide over the next few days. I know it will mean a lot to Catholics and others in Ireland who have an interest in the events of today and these next few days. |

Archbishop Brady to be made Cardinal |
His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, at the end of his weekly Wednesday Audience in St Peter's Square Rome on Wedndesday 17 October, announced that he will create 24 new Cardinals to include Archbishop Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh, Primate of All Ireland and President of the Irish Bishops' Conference.
On news of his appointment, Archbishop Brady said:
"I am deeply honoured and humbled by Pope Benedict's announcement that I am to be made a Cardinal. Today's news is a mark of the affection and esteem of the Holy Father for the whole Church in Ireland.
"It is a daunting privilege to join Cardinal Cahal Daly and Cardinal Desmond Connell in the College of Cardinals. This small country is to have three Cardinals for the first time in its history.
"I ask people for their prayers as I undertake my new responsibilities within the universal Church."

The Archdiocese of Armagh has teamed up with Catholic Ireland to create a new diocesan website. This is good news for the parishes in the diocese that are already with Catholic Ireland as updates on their parish websites, for example, change in Mass times, will automatically update themselves on the diocesan website. It also gives encouragement to parishes that are considering creating a website to sign up with Catholic Ireland.
