In the Emmaus gospel Jesus came upon the disciples as they walked the road and he journeyed part of the way with them – daring to question and challenge them as they shared together. To Cleopas and his companion, Jesus appeared as a stranger, an outsider, a foreigner. We are now going to listen to a stranger, an outsider, a foreigner. The fact that Br. Thierry is an outsider is, I believe, one of the important qualifications equipping him to speak to our Gathering. In saying that I think of something Canon Trevor Williams said in a homily he preached at our monastery last January, in the context of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Trevor was thinking of our particular monastic identity and also the largely French make-up of our group. I quote: "I believe the mission of your community is to travel as one of us, but not part of us. To use your gift as outsiders, strangers among us, to point the Churches back to our foundation stone, Christ. It is precisely because you are not caught up in our history and our story that you have a unique contribution to make here." I invite you to welcome and listen to Br. Thierry as St. Benedict says we should welcome and listen to every stranger who comes our way: as Christ Himself. |
