CALL ON THE HOLY SPIRIT Before you begin to read Scripture, pray to the Holy Spirit to come upon you. Our God, Father of light, you have sent your Son into the world, the Word made flesh, to reveal yourself to your human children. Send your Holy Spirit upon me now, so that I may encounter Jesus Christ in the Word which comes from you. May I come to recognise His presence in my life. Amen.
OPEN THE BIBLE AND READ God wants to speak to you today, person to person, by means of this text. Read the text over a few times … slowly paying attention. Try to listen to it with your whole heart, with your whole understanding, with your whole being. To listen to the words you may pronounce them. If distracted you might copy them.
SEARCH BY MEDITATING Reflect on the text with your understanding, enlightened by God's own light. Don't forget that all the books in the Bible form a whole, and so you should interpret scripture with scripture. Chew the words over in your heart and apply the message to yourself, to your life situation. Focus on Christ. It is He who will transform you.
PRAY TO THE LORD WHO HAS SPOKEN TO YOU Now that you have been filled with the Word of God, speak to your Lord. Better yet, respond to Him: to His invitations, to His inspirations, to his calls, to his messages and to the directions that he has given you in his Word, by the light of the Holy Spirit. Pray with frank honesty and trust. Get your attention off yourself and follow the attraction you feel toward the face of the Lord.
CONTEMPLATE… 1. The graced moment …CONTEMPLATE…. 2. See the Word in life … 1. You are now in partnership with the Lord. 2. Try to see the Lord in everything and come to regard everything through His eyes; yourself, other people, life events, history, every creature, and the whole world. Contemplation is seeing everything and everyone through God's eyes. As you look at life, do so listening to God's Word
KEEP THE WORD IN YOUR HEART At various times of the day, go over the passage – even just one verse from it-in your memory. This fosters awareness of God, which can unify and centre your whole day; your work, your rest, your social life and your moments of solitude.
DON'T FORGET THAT TO LISTEN MEANS TO OBEY … TO PUT INTO PRACTICE! If you have really listened to the Word, you will put it into practice: To listen is to obey. Commit yourself to putting God's word into action.
