The ministry of proclaiming the gospel has taken on various shapes down the centuries. Thomas Groom suggests that it includes any activity that involves evangelising, preaching and teaching. Proclaiming the gospel is a permanent aspect of the Church's ministry in the world.
Maria Harris distinguishes between the ministry of proclamation and the ministry of teaching. Under proclamation she highlights three tasks:
- Priestly listening
- Prophetic speech
- Political advocacy
Her tasks connected to teaching involve ensuring that:
- A wide range of settings are established
- A repertoire of teaching forms are used
- A broad range of topics are taught
Tom Sweetser and Peg Bishop emphasise the point that formation is a life-long process.
Parishes that are effective in the ministry of formation find ways of including formation as part of other parish events and projects. These include: • Formation as part of the weekend liturgies • Small groups that touch self-interest • Paying attention to transitions in people's lives
We would be delighted to hear what is going on in the area of formation in your context.
