Leadership

While Maria Harris speaks of leadership in the context of community building, Tom Sweetser and Peg Bishop give leadership its own place. They suggest the leadership of a parish includes the pastor, staff, pastoral council and coordinating groups, often called commissions, that oversee the essential aspects of the parish and give them direction and focus.

Good structure is essential. They offer the following as aspects of a good parish structure:

  • The pastoral council as center to the structure
  • Staff members as resource to the commissions
  • A training manual for all leaders
  • A common leadership night once a month

They have this to say about pastoral councils: "Too often pastoral councils are put off to the side and have no connection with the life and organization of the parish. The more successful parishes place the council at the center of the structure. This is the body, with the pastor as an integral and active member, that sets direction for the parish as a whole" (www.pepparish.org). Chapter five of Sweetser's book The Parish As Covenant: A Call to Pastoral Partnership provides an interesting model for the monthly meetings of a parish pastoral council and its sub-committees or commissions.

We are keen to hear stories of effective pastoral leadership and in particular of the work of parish pastoral councils. An example is the strategic pastoral planning embarked upon by St.Patrick's parish in Dundalk which you can read about here. To share your story contact us.
