The responses came flying back when we asked for suggestions about “Good Manners for Mobile Devices.”
Given below is a synopsis of the results. We offer it as only a beginning of a longer process; but it is a beginning. Use it as you wish. As one person put it, “It needs to be in multiple places by multiple media for multiple time periods.” Our thanks to all who took the time to contribute to this endeavor. MANNERS FOR TALKING AND TEXTING 1. If I am talking with someone and I get a call or a text message, I will not answer it or even look at it until after I have finished my conversation. 2. If I am expecting an urgent call or text, I will tell the person I’m talking with at the start of our conversation and will excuse myself for the interruption if it does come through. 3. I will turn off my phone or texting device during Mass, allowing me to give my full attention to the service. I will press the OFF button at the start and keep it off until the end. 4. I will turn off my device for meetings I attend or during meals with family and friends. Both presenters and those I love deserve my undivided focus and attention. 5. When I am in public and there are people close by I will find a place where I can talk without disturbing others. 6. If I am not in a secluded place, then I will talk in a moderate voice so that my conversation is not easily heard by others around me. 7. I will not send a nuisance call or text to anyone. 8. I do not have to acknowledge every call or text I receive. This frees me for more important tasks and from unnecessary distractions. 9. When I am in a class, I will attend to the teacher and not send texts, Facebook, tweets or the like. To do so is disrespectful to the presenter and those around me. 10. I will never text while driving, and will keep calls to a minimum, pulling over for longer conversations or ones that demand my full attention. 11. I will not take another's picture or post their picture using any form of social media without first asking the person's permission. Mrs. Wendy Rappé & Tom Sweetser, SJ
