Homily of His Holiness Benedict XVI in Yankee Stadium, New York |
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, In the Gospel we have just heard, Jesus tells his Apostles to put their faith in him, for he is “the way, and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). Christ is the way that leads to the Father, the truth which gives meaning to human existence, and the source of that life which is eternal joy with all the saints in his heavenly Kingdom. Let us take the Lord at his word! Let us renew our faith in him and put all our hope in his promises! |

Spe Salvi: Pope Benedict's second encyclical |
Encyclical letter Spe Salvi of the Supreme Pontiff Benedict XVI to the bishops, priests and deacons, men and women religious and all the lay faithful on Christian hope. Introduction 1. “SPE SALVI facti sumus”—in hope we were saved, says Saint Paul to the Romans, and likewise to us (Rom 8:24). According to the Christian faith, “redemption”—salvation—is not simply a given. Redemption is offered to us in the sense that we have been given hope, trustworthy hope, by virtue of which we can face our present: the present, even if it is arduous, can be lived and accepted if it leads towards a goal, if we can be sure of this goal, and if this goal is great enough to justify the effort of the journey. Now the question immediately arises: what sort of hope could ever justify the statement that, on the basis of that hope and simply because it exists, we are redeemed? And what sort of certainty is involved here? |

The Sacrament of Love - Pope Benedict's Exhortation on the Eucharist |
The Irish Bishops welcomed the publication of Pope Benedict XVI's Post-Synodal Exhortation on the Eucharist, entitled Sacramentum Caritatis – 'The Sacrament of Love'.
Highlighting the connection between this and the theme of Pope Benedict's first encyclical letter God is Love, the Bishops encourage people to read the text and to reflect upon its 'inspiring and often poetic' themes.
Commenting on the document, the Bishops said: "We are grateful to the Holy Father, and those who participated in the Synod, for providing the Church with such a rich source of further study and reflection on the Eucharist as the source and summit of the life and mission of the Church. The document brings a new level of harmony and clarity to the Church's presentation of the liturgical development which followed the Second Vatican Council."

Holy Father's message for Lent 2007 |
"'They shall look on Him whom they have pierced.' This is the biblical theme that this year guides our Lenten reflection. Lent is a favorable time to learn to stay with Mary and John, the beloved disciple, close to Him Who on the Cross, consummated for all mankind the sacrifice of His life. With a more fervent participation let us direct our gaze, therefore, in this time of penance and prayer, at Christ crucified Who, dying on Calvary, revealed fully for us the love of God. In the Encyclical 'Deus caritas est,' I dwelt upon this theme of love, highlighting its two fundamental forms: 'agape' and 'eros.' |

From Veritas to the Vatican - in time white smoke! |
Some time in February Veritas opened a new branch in Monaghan opposite St. Joseph's Church. It's a fine establishment, bright and modern, with a helpful staff and well-stocked. During the first week they were offering 20% discount off all goods. Yours truly went along to inspect. I don't carry much money with me as a rule, just a few pound in my pocket but I had my wallet with me just in case I saw something useful. I only bought a couple of books as things turned out. When I got home after teatime no wallet was to be found. |
